Matthews, the 2015 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series North Carolina Rookie of the Year, is coming off a career-best season. He scored 19 top-five finishes and 28 top-10 results in 2016. Matthews recorded two wins at Southern National Motorsports Park and a pair of victories at East Carolina Motor Speedway as well as a win at Carteret County Speedway.
The 20-year-old finished 12th in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national standings. He was the Southern National Motorsports Park late model track champion and the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series North Carolina state champion.
