Inside Line Promotions – HIGHLANDS, Texas (Oct. 1, 2014) – There’s no better way to wrap up a first career championship than to sweep the season finale.

That’s exactly what Channin Tankersley did last Saturday at Battleground Speedway, where he claimed his heat race and the main event en route to his first-ever ASCS Gulf South Region title.

“It was the perfect night,” he said. “We won the heat, won the main, clinched the championship, it was my dad’s birthday; it couldn’t have been any better.”

Tankersley kicked off the event by winning his heat race after starting on the outside of the front row.

“I got a good jump on the start and got out front,” he said. “We had a lot of speed in the heat race. I thought the car was a little tight, but overall it went pretty decent.”

That earned him a spot in the feature redraw. He pulled the No. 6 during the random draw to line up on the outside of the third row for the main event.

“We had a good first start,” he said. “I think we got up to third within a lap and they called it back for a red. On the second start I got another good start and I was up to fourth and they had a yellow. Then on a restart Travis (Rilat) took to the bottom to try getting the leader. I blew around the cushion and got to second.”

Tankersley remained in second place for several laps before another restart allowed him to make a bid for the lead.

“We had another restart and I did the same thing to the leader,” he said. “I got through lapped traffic pretty good. We were rolling good.”

Tankersley led the majority of the feature to score his third win of the season to cap the championship.

“It’s something I’ve been working for a long time,” he said. “I’ve always had the speed. We’d never put a whole year together. Consistency is what won it this year. I also want to thank Marvin and Peggy Pearson for the opportunity and support as well as Bruce Griffith and Wells Racing Engines for the help at the end of the year.”

Tankersley will take the next couple of weeks off before racing Oct. 17-18 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, for the 41st annual Winter Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
