Thomas Powers to First Career Pavement Victory at New Smyrna

Inside Line Promotions – NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (June 24, 2014) – It didn’t take long for Tyler Thomas to adapt to pavement.

Thomas led all 25 laps during only his second pro late model race last Saturday at New Smyrna Speedway to capture his first career victory driving for Tim Russell.

“It’s really special to me,” Thomas said. “With the group of guys that I’m racing for, they work their tails off and know exactly what they are doing on the race car and are good at giving me what I need. It’s pretty special to do it the second time out.”

Thomas only got a pair of 10-minute practice sessions as well as a five-minute scuff session prior to the start of the race, which was lined up by the drivers drawing for positions. Thomas pulled the No. 2 to start on the outside of the front row.

“I got a good start and the outside is the preferred line there,” he said. “If you get a good start you can get around the inside guy in turns one and two. That’s what we did. We got to the lead coming off turn two and led the rest of the way. It wasn’t a very eventful race, but we were quick the whole time.”

There weren’t any cautions and Thomas didn’t get into traffic as he sailed to the victory.

“The car is capable of winning,” he said. “I’m still learning a lot. I think each time out I’m going to learn that much more. I’m really excited for the next race.”

Thomas is slated to return to New Smyrna Speedway on July 19 for his third of seven races driving for Russell.

This weekend he will return to dirt with POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series races at Fayette County Speedway in Brownstown, Ill., on Friday and at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind., on Saturday.
