Binz Records Third Podium Finish in Last Four Races at Gator Motorplex

Inside Line Promotions – WILLIS, Texas (June 8, 2014) – John Binz scored his third podium finish in the last four races last Saturday at Gator Motorplex.

Despite a treacherous start to the winged micro sprint feature, Binz rallied to a third-place finish on the tricky track.

“It was slick, slick, slick,” he said. “(The track) never rubbered up. It was just super slick. You just followed right around the bottom and hit your marks. I’ve never been good running the bottom. That was pretty good practice of running the bottom, being smooth and hitting your marks. All in all, having another top five was pretty good.”

The event opened with Binz leading the first seven laps of his heat race before he capped it with a second-place result because of a shock issue.

“The bolt came out of the left rear shock,” he said. “On the final lap I drove it in real hard and it about spun me out.”

Binz was the final driver of the six involved in the feature redraw and he pulled the No. 2 in the random draw to start the 20-lap feature on the outside of the front row.

“The start was pretty bad,” he said. “I was running third before we got to the flag stand. I thought I was going to drive through the middle of the race track and pass the guy running second and I barely jumped his right rear tire so it sent me up the race track. I was running fourth coming off turn two.”

Several laps later Binz advanced into third place and he thought he had inherited the runner-up position when the leader spun, but officials deemed that a lap hadn’t been completed since his pass.

Binz restarted third and finished in the same position.

“The racing lane was right around the tires,” he said. “You couldn’t get off the bottom. The start really killed me. If you didn’t get a good start you weren’t going to do much.”

Binz will return to winged micro sprint action this Friday at Mountain Creek Speedway in Grand Prairie, Texas. He has finished second in his last two main events at the track.
