Inside Line Promotions – LAKE STEVENS, Wash. (March 3, 2014) – While Austen Wheatley’s focus has been on his business for the past several months, he is amped to return to the cockpit this week for a trio of World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series events.
Wheatley will make his season debut on Wednesday and Thursday at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas in Las Vegas and will complete his weekend on Saturday at Tucson International Raceway in Tucson, Ariz.
“We’ve got brand new Morrison engines,” he said. “I’ve been in the gym working with a personal trainer. I should be right. The car should be right.”
Wheatley, who acknowledged it will take him a few laps to get up to speed, said he has tiered goals for the weekend.
“The Outlaws and everybody else has been to Florida to start the season, but for us West Coast guys it’s our first go,” he said. “I would say my goals for Las Vegas are to make the show with a top 15 the first night and make the show with a top 10 the second night.”
Wheatley said he has always enjoyed the fast half-mile oval in Las Vegas.
“It’s one of my favorites,” he said. “It’s real big and real wide. There’s generally a top and a bottom lane. The key is to qualify well, which should be achievable with these engines.”
