Inside Line Promotions – TULSA, Okla. (Dec. 30, 2013) – Giovanni Scelzi is set to embark upon his second-ever trip to the prestigious Tulsa Shootout.

The 12-year-old will compete in the 600cc winged outlaw and “A” class micro sprint classes at the 29th edition of the famed event, which runs Wednesday through Saturday at Tulsa Expo Raceway. It will be Scelzi’s first time in both classes at the Tulsa Shootout.

“I ran the shootout two years ago and I ran the restricted class,” he said. “I drew a 40, which wasn’t very good. I started first in the heat race and won it. I started first in my qualifier race and won it. Then I started ninth in the A Main and finished sixth.”

The California native is now old enough to compete in two of the premier classes, which Scelzi expects to draw more than 150 of the best competitors from across the country.

“I’ve been running pretty good out here with the Faccintos and Duinkerkens and they are the ones who usually win out there,” he said. “You always have to go in with high expectations. I’m going to go in hoping for a Golden Driller or two.”

Last year was his first full season running winged outlaw micro sprints and Scelzi garnered a trio of feature victories. He is hoping to ride that success into the top-notch micro sprint event.

“I think 75 percent of it is luck of the draw,” he said. “You have to draw a high number so you start in the back of your heat race; you pass a lot of cars and get a lot of passing points. The key is to rack up as many points as you can going into the main event.”
