Scelzi Places 14th at Cotton Classic, Ready for Trophy Cup This Weekend

10/15/2013

Inside Line Promotions - HANFORD, Calif. (Oct. 14, 2013) - Dominic Scelzi put together a solid performance last Saturday at Kings Speedway during the 28 th annual Cotton Classic with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series.

Scelzi qualified 15th quickest, which started him on the inside of the third row for his 10-lap heat race.

"We went out a little bit late and the track had sealed over right under the cushion," he said of qualifying. "It slowed down a little and we didn't get the laps we wanted."

After starting fifth in his heat race, Scelzi dropped a couple of positions before rebounding to score a fourth-place finish to lock himself into the feature.

"I started on the bottom and it was greasy," he said of his heat. "I fell back to seventh on the start. As the bottom got better and better I was able to catch the guys. The yellow came out on Lap 6 and then I went from sixth to fourth (on the restart) and I stayed there."

As the bottom lane improved, so did Scelzi. He worked his way into the top 10 and was up to seventh by the midpoint of the 30-lap feature.

"Everybody was right around the bottom," he said. "The bottom would get really good starts because they were in the moisture. We drove up to seventh just right around the bottom. On Lap 15 there was a yellow flag. A guy passed me going into (turn) three and the yellow came out going out of (turn) four."

Scelzi was forced to start on the outside lane of the double-file restart and he dropped several positions before reaching the start/finish line.

"It seemed like everyone who started on the outside would get a horrible start," he said. "I spun my tires on the restart pretty bad. I fell back to 13 th. I went to the top in (turns) one and two and got all the way back up to the guy in seventh."

However, Scelzi's right rear tire dropped off the banking exiting turn two and he spun his tires again for a brief moment. That cost him several positions and he maintained a top 15 for the remainder of the race before placing 14th.

Scelzi returns to Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., this Friday and Saturday for the 20th annual Trophy Cup. He led the first 41 laps of the 50-lap feature during the finale last season before finishing 10th.

"We've got a realistic mindset," he said. "Of course we want to go there and win and be as fast as last year. Last year we had a lot of things fall our way. We're going to focus on making two solid laps in qualifying and we'll go from there. It's going to count on luck and being in the right place at the right time."
