Inside Line Promotions – LONGDALE, Okla. (May 22, 2023) – Jordon Mallett earned a pair of top-10 results last weekend during an ASCS National Tour doubleheader at Longdale Speedway.
Mallett finished sixth on Saturday before hustling from 22nd to 10th on Sunday, earning the Hard Charger Award to cap his first-ever weekend competing at the dirt oval.
The action began on Saturday with Mallett setting quick time in his group. He then placed fifth in a heat race to garner the eighth starting position in the main event.
“I felt like we were pretty good,” he said. “We would have liked to have been better on Saturday. We came on a little too late. We fell back the first half of the race. The car got better as the track progressed. They threw us a curve ball when they tilled and watered the track before the feature. I was a little snug early. As the track got racy again we were a lot better. We just needed more time to keep going forward.”
Mallett’s sixth-place result marked his best finish of the season with the ASCS National Tour.
The team returned to the track on Sunday. Unfortunately, a mechanical problem derailed Mallett after he timed in fourth quickest in his group to earn the pole position for a heat race.
“We found an oil leak after qualifying and couldn’t solve the problem or pinpoint where the oil was coming from,” he said. “We changed motors and ran out of time so we didn’t get to run our heat race. It was frustrating because it was an out-of-the-ordinary kind of deal, but thankfully that’s all it was. The safe bet is to yank one out and slide another one in. That’s where preparedness and organization shows up. In this game it’s about taking bad nights and turning them into something decent. I think we did that as well as we could.”
Mallett’s run from the back of the field to a 10th-place result was his third top 10 of the season with the series.
“The car was really good,” he said. “I had made it up to eighth and we had a red flag. I didn’t really know yet the track was starting to rubber up down the straightaways in a different line than I was running. On the restart I missed the rubber and a couple of cars got by me. I jumped up there and found there was a little bit of rubber. At that point it was a little too late.”
This weekend will showcase a tripleheader for Mallett with ASCS National Tour races on Friday at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., and Saturday and Sunday at Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon, Mo.
